Health care and health research can have a huge impact on communities.
In the past, research was not always done in ways that acknowledged the importance of traditional knowledge and the agency of Indigenous peoples in the north.
In order to ensure that research projects benefit the people, community members must be active participants and even co-investigators throughout the research project.
They also make sure that researchers know about the culture, history and context of their community and that they are studying the right subjects. After the research is completed, they make sure the results are used to improve health care in the community.
